Stop the Genocide-Sue for Peace!

Although there is not a Genocide happening in Gaza, there is devastating suffering and death.

It can be stopped immediately.  Declare peace.  Accept the existence of Israel and Return the hostages.  You can immediately focus on building a State of Palestine, and most of the world’s nations, including Israel, will support the enterprise.   Outside forces of hegemony and oppression (Hamas, Iran, Hezbollah) that have imposed themselves are back on their heels, allowing Palestinians an opportunity for self-determination that has not been seen since 2000 at Camp David.

This is a pragmatic solution.  Israel exists.  Whether you question Israel’s legitimacy will not make the nation go away.  Remaining belligerent only continues the harm to both Israelis and Palestinians.  Negotiations are fraught.  Negotiating requires leaving some things behind in exchange for other things we determine are more critical.  Peace and a Sovereign State would be two extraordinary wins for the Palestinians. Peace is the only way for our children to know something beyond hatred and death.

It is time.

It depends on the context

Yes, the presidents of Harvard and MIT should also resign. Because it really does depend on the context.

Free speech is not the unfettered ability to say anything.  Free Speech on campus should be balanced against the needs of the students to attend school without threat or harassment.

Advocating for Genocide is despicable.  Although the University is a free marketplace of ideas, calling out for the extermination of Jews on campus is the furthest from a safe and secure space for Jews as there can be.  For those presidents unaware of Jewish history, 6 million Jews were slaughtered during the Holocaust.  So, Genocide is an exceptionally loaded concept.

The inability to understand the context of this issue and articulate it during an appearance before Congress demonstrates the incompetence of these people to fulfill the role of president at these Universities.  If Harvard and MIT are okay with that, that is on them, but they also demonstrate shameful behavior and terrible judgment.

Advocating Genocide is just Wrong

Speech advocating for Genocide is despicable and unacceptable.  Supporting murder and elimination of an entire group cannot be sanctioned even under the banner of “free speech.” It is the height of exclusion and hate.   And by its very nature, it bullies and intimidates anyone who would be the target of such speech. Watching the presidents of three of the ostensibly most illustrious colleges fumble this issue is sad. Their equivocations and attempts to nuance the question are an embarrassment to everyone who supports higher education and demonstrate the incompetency of these individuals.

Wow- you got spanked and are now on an apology tour.  Shame on you again.   Perhaps it would be best if you made this your goodbye tour.  Our best institutions need more than you can give, or they will cease to be the best.

It is time for these people to resign, and the colleges find people willing and capable of leading institutions where the free marketplace of ideas is promoted yet will not tolerate anything, no matter how heinous.
