  1. So long as Israel continues to occupy and oppress another people, it is not a Jewish state. We were strangers in the land of Egypt — and in many countries after that. We know in our souls what it is like to be an oppressed minority. Israel’s treatment of Palestinians in the occupied territories and its refusal to allow there to be a Palestinian state deprives it, insofar as I am concerned, of the right to call itself a “Jewish state.” Israel does not have to continue on the path to becoming a pariah nation. It can, and should, return to its Jewish roots.
